In 1989, the United States National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recognized 884 poisonous substances (many synthetically derived from petrochemicals) from a list of 2,983 chemicals used in the fragrance industry that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders, allergic respiratory reactions, skin and eye irritations.

Many chemicals found in cosmetics don’t cause obvious immediate signs of toxicity, but slowly poison us through repeated use.

In America, a 1993 survey found levels of the highly toxic and carcinogenic 1,4 dioxane in 27 out of 30 children’s shampoo and bath products tested. In the same study, of 54 cosmetic raw ingredients tested, all contained 1,4 dioxane. A study conducted by the University of California on 58,000 beauty therapists, hairdressers and manicurists, revealed that they developed cancer at four times the rate of the general population.

Many drugs on the market today are administered through transdermal skin patches, which have been shown to be up to 95% more effective than oral medication. This proves that the skin, the largest organ of the body and our first line of immunity, is permeable to all chemicals.

Taking the supplement: Take according to directions, only for as long as you need to get the symptoms under control. Alternatively, take it for five days a week or three weeks a month. Kava taken with 500mg magnesium is more effective than taking the herb alone.

9. Spirulina

Nutritionist Jeanette Ewin PhD, author of The Foods we Need to Eat (Thorsons, £8.99) believes that certified organic spirulina, ‘may be one of the most valuable foods in the 21st century because it contains most of the nutrients we need in a balance that helps us grow and heal and it’s low in calories.’

Good for: all-round health, yeast infections, skin and hair quality, inflammation, energy levels, detoxification. Grodenski State Medical University in Russia used spirulina to detoxify children exposed to high levels of radiation. Children given five grams a day suffered less radiation sickness and fewer allergies. The US National Cancer Institute suggests it holds promise for the treatment of HIV and Aids.

Taking the supplement: Mix the powder into fresh juice in the morning. There are no toxic doses.

10. Ginkgo biloba

One of the most heavily researched plants in the world, this super antioxidant appears to delay or inhibit the ageing process. Researchers at the University of Limburg in the Netherlands reported in the Lancet in 1992 that ginkgo was as effective as a widely prescribed pharmaceutical treatment for cerebral insufficiency (reduced circulation in the brain that can lead to dementia).

Good for: improving memory, preventing, slowing the effects of senile dementia, regulating or preventing circulatory problems such as angina, stroke, thrombosis, some cases of impotence and chronic headaches. May also reduce dizziness, tinnitus, depression, vision problems.

Taking the supplement: The recommended dose is 60-120mg a day of a product that contains 24 per cent standardized extract.

Minerals

The word mineral literally means 'mined from the earth'. They can be divided into two main groups, metallic and non-metallic elements. Carbohydrates, fats, proteins and vitamins are all based on the element, carbon, and are known as organic substances. Minerals do not contain carbon and are said to be inorganic. In nutritional terms, the word mineral refers to inorganic substances of which we need to obtain more than 100mg per day from our diet. Those needed in amounts much less than 100mg are referred to as trace elements - many of which are metals.

Around 20 minerals and trace elements are essential for the biochemical reactions occurring in human metabolism. The average adult contains around 3kg of minerals and trace elements, most of which are found in the skeleton.

In general, the mineral content of foods depends on the soil in which produce is reared or grown. This is in contrast to the vitamin content of food, which is usually similar wherever it's produced in the world. Acid rain and food processing can also reduce the mineral content of foods enough to cause deficiency.

Although some vitamins can be synthesized in the body in tiny amounts, minerals and trace elements can only come from the diet. As a result, mineral deficiency is more common than vitamin deficiency, especially among slimmers, the elderly, pregnant women, vegetarians and those eating vegetables grown in mineral-poor soils.

The role of minerals in the body

Minerals have a number of roles in the body:

* Structural e.g. calcium, magnesium and phosphate which strengthen bones and teeth.
* Maintaining normal cell function e.g. sodium, potassium, calcium.
* Co-factor for important enzymes e.g. copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc.
* Involved in oxygen transport e.g. iron.
* Hormone function e.g. chromium, iodine.
* As antioxidants e.g. selenium, manganese.

Some trace elements such as nickel, tin and vanadium are known to be essential for normal growth in only tiny amounts, although their exact roles is not yet fully understood.

Vitamins

Vitamins are naturally occurring nutrients which, even though they are only needed in tiny amounts, are essential for life. The word vitamin was first used by Casimir Funk, a Polish chemist, in 1911, as a contraction of two words: vital (meaning life) and amine (a chemical group originally incorrectly thought to occur in all vitamins).

There are 13 major vitamins that can't be synthesized in the body (vitamin C is one), or which can only be made in tiny amounts (vitamin D, niacin) that are too small for most people's needs. You therefore need to obtain adequate amounts of vitamins from your food and by taking dietary supplements.

Most vitamins act as essential intermediaries or catalysts to keep the body's metabolic reactions running smoothly and efficiently. These reactions include those responsible for:

* digestion
* converting food into energy
* cell division and growth
* tissue repair
* transporting oxygen and wastes in the circulation
* immunity
* mental alertness
* making hormones
* reproduction
* protecting the body from poisons
* neutralizing the harmful by-products of metabolism such as
* free radicals

If your intake of any vitamin is consistently too low, your metabolism will not function smoothly, and relatively common problems can occur such as:

* dry, itchy skin
* tiredness and lack of energy
* increased susceptibility to infection
* reduced fertility
* poor wound healing

How quickly these deficiencies will lead to problems depends on how quickly your store of a particular vitamin runs out. Symptoms of folic acid deficiency may show within weeks, for example, as very little is stored in the body. Stores of vitamin B12 however are large, and it can take years for deficiency to show up.
In general, vitamins that are fat-soluble are stored more easily in the body (e.g. in the liver) than water-soluble ones that are easily lost in urine. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E and K, and the water-soluble vitamins are the B and C group whose levels (with the exception of vitamin B12) must be continually replenished from the diet.

Aloe Vera


Native to Africa, Aloe Vera is commonly cultivated as a pot plant and has two distinct types of medicinal use. The clear gel contained in the leaf is a remarkably effective healer of wounds and burns, speeding up the rate of healing and reducing the risk of infection. The yellow sap from the base of the leaf when dried is known as "bitter aloes". It is a strong laxative, useful for short-term constipation.

Key Constituents: Anthraquinones (Aloin, Aloe-emodin), Resins, Tannins, Polysaccharides, Aloectin B.

Key Actions: Heals wounds, Emollient, Stimulates secretions of bile, Laxative.

Healing properties

Extensive research since the 1930s in the US and Russia has shown that the clear gel has a dramatic ability to heal wounds, ulcers and burns, putting a protective coat on the affected area and speeding up the rate of healing. This action is in part due to the presence of Aloectin B, which stimulates the immune system.

Traditional & Current Uses

Beauty treatment Aloe Vera has a long history as a skin lotion - Cleopatra is said to have attributed her beauty to it.

Western remedy In the West, Aloe Vera first became popular in the 1950s when its ability to heal burns, in particular radiation burns, was discovered.

First aid Aloe Vera is an excellent first aid remedy to keep in the home for burns, grazes, scalds and sunburn. A leaf, broken off, releases soothing gel, which may be applied to the affected part.
Skin conditions The gel is useful for almost any skin condition that needs soothing and astringing, and will help varicose veins to some degree.

Ulcers the protective and healing effect of Aloe Vera also works internally, and the gel can be used for peptic ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.

Laxative the bitter yellow liquid in the leaves (bitter aloes) contains anthraquinones, which are strongly laxative. They cause the colon to contract, generally producing a bowel movement 8-12 hours after consumption. At low doses, the bitter properties of the herb stimulate the digestion. At higher doses, bitter aloes are laxative and purgative.

Natural Beauty Tips

Whatever beauty aid you decide to make use of, stick to it and do it regularly to get a lasting benefit.

* Rub a rind of lemon over your face if you have an oily skin and this will lessen grease and whiten your complexion.
* Mix the juice of one lemon to two tablespoons of milk or cream. Apply this on your face and neck and massage for a few minutes. Then rinse off. Do this daily before going to bed. It helps to bleach your face and keep your hands soft and supple.
* Take a teaspoon of limejuice and stir in half a teaspoon of honey and a few drops of milk. Mix well and apply over your face and neck fifteen minutes before you take your bath. This lotion will have a mild bleaching effect on a greasy skin, which because of its excessive oil may be rather sallow.
* To one tablespoon of cucumber juice, stir in a few drops of limejuice and a dash of turmeric powder. Mix well and apply over your face and neck. Leave it on for half an hour and then remove it with ordinary tap water. This lotion makes an excellent whitener for all types of skin.
* Cut tomatoes in half and rub over the face. This is useful for toning up and whitening the skin and refining the pores.
* To cleanse the face, soak a piece of cotton wool in unboiled milk and rub the face with it gently from the chin upwards to the forehead.
* Mix a teaspoonful of turmeric powder with cream, sandal powder and bengal gram flour and make into a paste and apply once a day for about half an hour before a bath. This is an excellent beauty aid to keep the face fresh and soft.
* Grate and squeeze juice out of a small piece of watermelon. Apply it on your face and leave it on for about fifteen minutes. Then wash with hot water and splash on some cold water. This lotion not only freshens up the skin but also clears the skin of its blemishes.
* Grind a few cabbage leaves and extract the juice. Dissolve a little yeast in it and to this add a teaspoon of honey. Mix well and apply it thickly over your face and neck and leave it on for fifteen minutes. Then remove with cotton wool soaked in water. This is an excellent remedy for counter-acting dry skin
* To close pores that are open, rub ice wrapped in cotton wool gently on the face.
* Add a little carrot juice and orange juice to a cup of milk. Rub this mixture daily on a face scarred with smallpox marks and they may disappear gradually.
* To remove dead skin from the face, apply a mixture of glycerine, limejuice and sugar and rub gently.

Organic. All natural. Herbal. Any of these words on the label of our personal care products makes it more appealing. After all, all natural is 搃n� these days. What is not too appealing is the unnaturally high price you pay at the checkout. So, why not avoid the extra cost and make these beauty treatments at home? The result is store bought beauty without the store bought price.

Shampoo, for example, can really get expensive if you are looking for something extra for problem hair, or just to give your hair a little pizzazz. However, if you are on a budget, you may buy the cheaper brands, sacrificing the extra benefits the others provide.

A simple solution is following your usual shampoo with a homemade rinse. For shiny hair, rinse with cider vinegar, one half cup to every quart of water. If natural highlights are what you are looking for, use chamomile tea, or make your own rinse by steeping chamomile flowers in hot water, then strain. Remove build up caused by hair sprays and other products with a rinse of Witch Hazel. Whichever one you use, make sure you catch the liquid in a bowl if you want to rinse your hair more than once.

Another area that can get costly is skin care products. From toners to cleansers, the more they claim to do the more expensive they are. However, it is surprisingly simple to get wonderful results with things you may already have around the house. You might not know it, but an egg makes a good mask. To tone and tighten, use a beaten egg white. Apply to your face and then rinse it off after it dries. To remove excess oil, the egg yolk can be whipped and mixed with six tablespoons of honey to make a peel off mask.

A refreshing facial is as simple as pouring boiling water over chamomile flowers in a bowl. Just hold your face a few inches above the water and let the steam work its magic. (You can do this, and then later use the liquid for your hair.) If you need an astringent after your facial, Witch Hazel is an all-natural one that can still be bought for about one half of what the name brands cost.

For an all over beauty treatment, relax in a tub full of water with one half cup of powdered milk, which acts as a skin softener. To make your beauty bath do double duty, add a cheesecloth or muslin bag filled with your favorite herbs. Soothing herbs are chamomile flowers and rose flowers. For a stimulating bath, you can use basil, bay, rosemary, or thyme. Sage and strawberry leaves relieve aching muscles and joints. On the other hand, you can make a cleansing body scrub with a handful of oatmeal and two teaspoons of sea salt.

After trying a few of these beauty boosters, you will feel like you have had the spa treatment, without ever leaving home, and, without your money ever leaving your pocket.
